A new era begins this holiday season. Yes, Sony finally revealed the Playstation 4’s release date during Gamescon. Sony’s next generation console will release in North America on November 15, 2013 and November 29, 2013 in Europe. But it wasn’t just the release date that got gamers excited. No, there were so many big announcements that this year’s Gamescom almost felt like E3.
While gamers are finally happy to see a PS4 release, many were just as excited to see the Playstation Vita get a well deserved price cut. Starting tomorrow, you’ll be able to pick up a Playstation Vita for $199.99. Sony also announced that the Playstation Vita memory cards will also be getting a well deserved price drop too.
Speaking of the PS Vita, Borderlands 2 will release on the Vita in 2014. Honestly, I’m Borderlands’d out, but this is still a great, but not shocking announcement for the Playstation Vita. Hey, if you’re now in the market for a Playstation Vita and Borderlands 2, it might be wise to wait because I could easily see a $200 Borderlands 2 bundle in the foreseeable future.
Sony also continued to show their strong launch lineup which now includes Minecraft. I know, I was just as shocked as you were. I knew Minecraft would eventually make it to PS4, but I certainly wasn’t expecting it to be a launch title. Hell, I would’ve bet all my lunch money that Minecraft wouldn’t launch in 2013… thank god I didn’t.
We also learned that the PC game, Rogue Legacy, will be releasing on both the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita. To sweeten the deal, if you buy the PS4 version, you will receive entitlement to the PS Vita version. That’s corporate slang for saying it’s a cross-buy title.
Now I know many of you are excited for some third party titles such Battlefield 4 and Watch Dogs, but do you really want to buy those games twice? Probably not, but Sony may have a solution for you. Sony is allowing PS3 gamers who buy a copy of Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghost, Watch Dogs, and Assassins Creed: Black Flag to upgrade to the PS4 “digital” version for a “significantly discounted price”. Now you can get both versions and play with your PS3 and PS4 friends. While no official price was given, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was $10. GameStop and Amazon are running a similar Xbox promotion where you can trade your current generation versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, NBA 2K14, Watch Dogs, Need for Speed Rivals, Madden NFL 25, and FIFA 14 and get the next generation version for $10. That’s not a bad deal at all.
But what about streaming these awesome PS4 games? Are we still going to be restricted to using just UStream? Absolutely not! Sony has announced that Twitch will be coming to Playstation 4 and gamers will be able to broadcast their gameplay directly to their channel. Gamers will also be able to watch other channels, but that will require a separate application. Still, you get the best of both worlds.
